Who are we?
Pharmagate NGO is an association of professional pharmacists, experts, and activists which aims to convince the world’s pharmaceutical giants to leave Russia completely or at least to reduce the production and export to Russia of drugs that do not belong to the list of essential medicines. The National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health support us in this endeavour.

What do we do and why?
We are intensifying information and reputational pressure on global
pharmaceutical manufacturers to stop sponsoring the war because the pharmaceutical
business, which continues to import and sell non-essential drugs in the Russian
Federation, must understand that, in this way, it is supporting the aggressor
country.
For example, the Slovenian KRKA Group, which is among the top 20 global
pharmaceutical giants in terms of sales in Russia, paid $35 million to the budget of
the Russian Federation in 2021. These are 35,000 shells for 122 mm guns, or 490
Smerch multiple launch rocket systems, or 5 Kalibr cruise missiles, or 3 Su-25
attack aircraft, or 1 Su-34 fighter-bomber, with which the enemy is killing
Ukrainians.
After the February 24 aggression, the company did not stop doing
business in Russia, citing humanitarian reasons and the need to provide Russians
with vital medicines. Moreover, in the first quarter of 2022, the KRKA Group
demonstrated a 10% increase in sales of medicinal products in Russia.
We
conducted a thorough study, involving leading pharmacists, which showed that among
all active substances or combinations included in KRKA medicines imported into
Russia, only 8 (7.62%) belong to the “essential medicines” and, at the same time,
are not produced in Russia.
Each of the eight active substances or combinations
can be replaced by other medicinal products from the list of essential drugs,
produced in Russia.
The pharmaceutical capacities of Russia allow the population
to be supplied with the most necessary medicines independently without the need to
import drugs from the KRKA Group.
Next steps
What’s next?
We have prepared appeal letters to the shareholders and managers of the
KRKA Group describing the situation and presenting the results of the conducted
research, which clearly show that statements about the impossibility of leaving
Russia due to the need to provide Russians with vital medicines are manipulations
and distortions that do not correspond to reality.
The letter contains appeals
and information that should help the management of the KRKA Group to make a balanced
and correct decision.
In total, more than 400 letters were sent, both to
official addresses and through found profiles of managers on the LinkedIn
network.
In case of a negative answer, the media and influencers will join us at
the next stage. Having analysed the risks for Ukrainian patients, we will also ask
the National Security Defence Council and other regulators to consider the possible
application of sanctions against companies that continue operating in Russia and
thus sponsor the war.

Why is this important?
The global pharmaceutical industry is close to leaving Russia, and the
Pharmagate investigation and hard work to build pressure could make a strong
case.
A significant decline in the global pharmaceutical business will leave the
aggressor state without taxes, create a burden on the bureaucratic system, and lead
to isolation, as a civilizational choice of Russia.
We currently have a priority
list of 25 European and American pharmaceutical companies. Over time, we will add
Indian and Chinese manufacturers to it.
